A Tribute to John McSpadden
The end of a legend?
Loss yes, but certainly not the end.
It is with great sorrow and deep sadness that I have just learned of John T McSpadden’s passing.
I met the father of the Gutta Condensor at the SFE Endovision Congress in 2014 in Nice,
where he gave a masterful lecture that will remain forever engraved in my mind, surely the best I have ever seen in endodontics.
But for those who might believe that the figure was inaccessible, it was exactly the opposite.
An elegance, remarkable class, impressive stature and kindness, closeness.
I met him several times afterwards at international congresses, and he would always surprise me as I was breaking through the crowd or crossing a crowded hall to come and give me a sincere hug. I am nothing and he was admired by all, respected by all and yet he never failed to come and greet me with a simplicity and sincerity that strengthened my admiration.
A radiant smile also constantly illuminated his face, illustrating his joie de vivre and his constantly alert mind, turned towards the endodontics of tomorrow, looking for daily progress.
The whole world of endodontics is in mourning, and all dentistry with it. There isn’t a dentist today who hasn’t used an instrument developed by John.
It’s an immense loss.
The entire French Society of Endodontology, its Board of Directors and all its members join me in extending our deepest condolences to his loved ones and family.
Legends never die.
Goodbye Mr. McSpadden, I have no doubt that you are already with Mr. Shilder discussing subjects that we all can guess.
Thank you for everything you have given us. We will never be able to repay you.
Rest in Peace.
Dr Nicolas Gardon
