Quality of life and endodontic treatment

Pain and discomfort arising from endodontic diseases have long been considered in diagnosis and treatment planning. However, arguably, it is the impact and consequence of these symptoms on the quality of life (QoL) or daily living that is important in providing understanding of the burden of the diseases and ultimately in determining the benefit of care to the lives of patients. To this end there has been a growing interest into assessing the impact of endodontic disease on health- and oral health-related quality of life, and on studies to identify key factors associated with its impact. This lecture will review the literature on the impact of endodontic treatment on quality of life, systematically dissect the methods used and offer suggestions on methodological issues in performing studies on QoL outcome measures. I will first provide a high-level overview of QoL, followed by systematically appraising the literature that has evaluated QoL after non-surgical and surgical endodontic treatment, including retreatment. The lecture will conclude with the potential problems in current literature and open up some blue-sky thinking on how future studies can be performed to ascertain the impact of endodontic therapies on quality of life.

Dr. Prasanna Neelakantan is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Endodontology at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong. He also serves as the Assistant Dean for Research and Innovation in the Faculty. He graduated from India and also completed his specialty training in conservative dentistry and endodontics from India. He went on to complete a doctorate from ACTA, University of Amsterdam.

With more than 90 scientific publications in high impact peer reviewed journals, Dr. Prasanna’s h-index now stands at 27. His papers have been cited about 2700 times. He has delivered more than 50 international invited/keynote lectures and mentors research groups in several parts of the world.

He is a recipient of many awards and honours including the Indian Society for Dental Research (Indian Division of the IADR) Fellowship in 2012, Young Achiever’s award from Saveetha University in 2012, International Association for Dental Research Innovation in Oral Care Award and Joseph Lister Award in 2018. He serves on the editorial board of the International Endodontic Journal and edits several special issues related to microbiology for the Frontiers group of journals. He is a reviewer for several international journals including the International Endodontic Journal and Journal of Endodontics. His research group focuses on biofilm biology, nano-therapeutics, collagen crosslinking and minimally invasive root canal debridement.

Dr Jörg SCHRÖDER (Berlin)

Endodontics is teamwork !

Overall endodontic procedures are considered being stressful and exhausting for the dental team. Beside frequent changes of the working field view causing fatigue, imperfect handling of instruments and devices increases unwanted stress, resulting in additional time needed fort the endodontic treatment.

The importance of team work in endodontics increases even more with the integration of magnifying devices (i.e. loupes and dental microscopes) into clinical daily routine. This change in concept requires new approaches in many aspect as for example the space for exchanging instruments is limited and the direct view on the operative field is restricted and sometimes even non-existent.

The increased involvement of the dental assistant in the course of treatment is therefore of great significance. Many activities previously carried out by the practitioner himself can and should be delegated to the dental assistant. As a result, a perfect team approach creates a seamless and efficient treatment procedure and contributes significantly to reduced working stress.

Curriculum vitae Dr. Jörg Schröder

Jörg Schröder obtained his degree in dentistry from the Freie Universität Berlin in 1988.

He is working in his own private practice in Berlin limited to endodontology. Over the years he and his team developed a workflow which stills the demands on working with the dental operating microscope in a seamless and effective way.

In 2000 he started with continuing education in endodontics. Since 2005 he is giving courses and lectures on endodontic topics in Germany and abroad. In 2007 he started to publish articles in national peer reviewed journals.

From 2007 – 2009 he has been a member of the board of the German Society of Endodontics (DGET). He is one of the five founding members of the Blog “Wurzelspitze” which is focused on high quality endodontic treatment.

Since 2010 Dr. Schröder is part of the teaching staff of the endodontic master program at “Heinrich-Heine-University” in Düsseldorf.

He is a certified Member of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE), member of the German Society of Endodontics and Dental Traumatology (DGET), member of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT), member of the Swiss Society of Endodontology (SSE) and member of several german endodontic study groups.

Since 2012 he is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD).

In 2013 he was the winner of the “Peter-Guldener-Award” which is donated by “Quintessence” peer reviewed Journal “Endodontie”.

In 2016 he published the video “ergonomics with the dental microscope”, Quintessence.

E-ReputationMatters : Grow your practice for FREE !

with the world. What story about you are they telling? During this program, we will discuss the

psychology of internet reviews. We will review how our prospective patients feel about them

and what literature is available from academia. A thorough discussion of which websites are

most important and impactful for dental practices will occur. The group will also review the

systems and scripting needed to incorporate into our practices to ensure success in getting our

patients to leave positive reviews. A significant portion of the program will also be devoted to

how we should handle responding to a negative review should one occur. This fast-paced,

enlightening program is sure to help demystify the world of online reviews in fun & casual

manner! Dental team involvement is highly recommended for this program.

  • How do online reviews help drive patients to your office?
  • How can you increase your online presence?
  • Where can a few marketing dollars go the longest way?
  • What do you do if you get a bad online review?
  • How do you engage your patients in social media platforms?
  • What review sites do you need to be checking to protect yourself?
  • How do you make sure patients can find you online?
  • How can you drive more clicks to your website?
